24 March - David Smith LRPS judged our Reg Mullard annual flora and fauna competiton. Congratulations to the overall winner Miles Thompson with his beautiful print May bug. Congratulations also to Mike Hall for his PDI Giraffe at waterhole which came 2nd overall. The full table of results can be found in the "members area" using this link Reg Mullard Awards table 2022.

17 March - Cranleigh hosted a three-way competition, judged by Paul Graber ARPS, between Cranleigh, Haslemere and Midhurst Camera Clubs. Congratulations to Midhurst, the overall winners. Cranleigh came a very close second. The judge acknowledged that the quality of all the images from each club would have scored very highly in their respective club competitions but that, for this evening, he endeavoured to give a spread of scores. The overall scores are shown in the table below along with the four images scoring a 10.

10 March - A workshop where several members brought along a number of their images for discussion and then explained why they took the shot in the way they did. Fellow members proffered their opinions and in some instances gave suggestions for possible improvements to the images.

3 March - Gerald Kitiyakara ARPS judged our 4th PDI and Mon prints competitions which included the set subject Bridges. After critiquing all the 55 entries he awarded a maximum score of 10 to six images, four in the open sections and two in the set subject sections. He also awarded 9.5 to six images, two in the open sections and four for the set subject.

24 February - Submission and sorting of members exhibition entries and payment of fees.

17 February - Paul Graber ARPS judged our 4th Colour prints competition which included the set subject Bridges. After critiquing the 34 entries he awarded a maximum score of 10 to four images, two in the open section and two in the set subject section. He also awarded 9.5 to three images, two in the open section and one for the set subject.

10 February - A Zoom only meeting where the challenge was Minimalism. Club members submitted around 45 images which generated much discussion. Whether some images could be termed minimilism might in some circumstances have been considered debatable but that did not detract from what was a good selection of pictures which made for a very enjoyable and entertaining evening.

3 February - a workshop enabling members to submit their pictures for review by fellow members and garner opinions for how images could be improved especially if they are to be used subsequently in future club competitions.

27 January - the 3rd Open PDI and Mono prints competitions judged by Tim Morland ARPS. He gave an excellent considered critique of the 30 mono print and 32 PDI entries, awarding a maximum score of 10 to three images in the mono print competition and to four images in the PDI competition. In addition three images in the Monochrome prints and three in the PDI competitions were awarded 9.5.

20 January - Presentation The seeing eye by Paul Mitchell FRPS. Paul's talk did not simply focus on the technicalities of picture taking but more on how to see beyond the obvious by exploring details, textures and shapes found in both nature and man made objects. He went on to explain the various creative techniques such as intentional camera movement, multiple exposures, the use of creative lenses and filters etc he employed while making the images shown during his presentation.

13 January - Tim Clarke ARPS judged our 3rd Colour prints open competition. He gave an excellent critique of the 36 entries and awarded a maximum score of 10 to six images which demonstrated the high quality of the entries in what proved to be a highly competitive evening. A special congratulations to Norman Price whose entry The chess players the judge considered as the overall competition winner. All the winning images are shown below.

9 December - The annual Christmas supper was, by necessity, replaced again this year with a Zoom Christmas party and included the usual party quiz organised by our resident quiz master John Walbrick as well as the announcement of the Chairman's challenge - The odd man out. A relaxing evening just to enjoy chatting with other like minded people who also love their photography. Well done to our champion master quizzer Mike Harrison.

2 December - Ken Scott ARPS judged our 2nd Mono prints and PDI competitions. Each competition had an Open and Set subject (Glass) section. He gave an excellent considered critique of the 26 mono print and 30 PDI entries, awarding a maximum score of 10 to four images in the mono print competition (two in the open and two in the set subject sections) and to four images in the PDI competition (two in the open and two in the set subject sections). In addition two images in the Monochrome prints and three in the PDI competitions were awarded 9.5.

25 November - The theme for the evening was the song title What a wonderful world. Members brought along images reflecting various lyrics taken from the song - I see trees of green; red roses too; skies of blue; clouds of white; the dark sacred night; colors of the rainbow; people going by; friends shaking hands saying how do you do; they're really saying I love you; I hear babies cry; they'll learn much more than I'll ever know. Others interpreted this theme with some of their own favourite pictures that reminded them of what a wonderful world we live in.

18 November - David Smith LRPS CPAGB judged our 2nd Colour prints open and set subject (Glass) competitions. He gave an excellent critique of the 35 entries, split 18:17 between the open and set subject sections, and awarded a maximum score of 10 to two images in the open and three images in the set subject competitions. In addition two images in the open and three in the set subject were awarded 9.5. Congratulations to Norman Price and Chris Flood for their winning entries in the open and to Elizabeth Bulley, Graham Humphries and Chris Flood in the set subject competitions.

11 November - A presentation The wider world of photography - Part 1 by guest speaker and commercial photographer Ashley Franklin ARPS APAGB. He took us on a journey to discover the fascinating world of photography beyond the camera club by exploring the history, style and impact of portrait, fashion, industrial, war, press and social documentary photography.
It was an evening of informative, inspiring, powerful and world-changing imagery where we saw the work of many photo greats like Avedon, Bailey, Beaton, Bloomfield, Capa, Contreras, McCullin, McCurry, Karsh, Leibowitz, Salgado, Winston Link, et al, all accompanied by a well researched narrative about the photographers and their photographic styles.

 

28 October - - Ken Woods LRPS judged our 1st monochrome prints and PDI competitions. In the monochrome competition he awarded 1 image a 10 and 2 images 9.5. In the PDI section he scored 2 images a 10 and 2 images 9.5. The images scoring 10 were:

21 October - Our guest speaker, the SPA chairman David Smith LRPS CPAGB, took us on an African safari showing us many wonderful images of the flora and fauna of the region. His pictures and narrative conveyed the atmosphere of an organised safari - contending with luggage restrictions when travelling to remote locations in a small aircraft, the behaviour of wild animals in very close proximity to humans seated safely in their 4x4 vehicles, and also the accommodation, food and drink, which was of a high standard considering the remoteness of the locations.

14 October - At our 1st colour print competition, Rob Bonfield gave a reasoned and very comprehensive critique of the 38 prints on show. He awarded 3 images a maximum score of 10,

He also awarded 9.5 points to a further 3 images.

This was our first attempt to live stream via Zoom a club competition direct from the church hall. While there were some challenges with video continuity and lighting the streaming went reasonably well but more importantly it provided very useful data for improving how we may Zoom our future print competitions.

7 October - During the first half of the meeting, CCC member Norman Price gave a practical demonstration on how to set up a simple still life studio with minimal equipment while still achieving excellent results. He commenced with a picture of a shoe with a simple seamless background he had taken earlier that day in his own studio using the same technique. It indicates how cheaply and effectively a product shot can be taken using basic materials and equipment.

Using other examples he also demonstrated how to set up essential lighting techniques, such as rim lighting and backlighting.

During the second half of the meeting, members were free to use their own cameras to shoot images of the props on display.

30 September - This was the first time a Cranleigh Camera Club meeting has been streamed live directly from the church hall using Zoom technology. Around 16 members attended the workshop in the main hall with a further 6 members accessing it remotely via the internet. Members submitted a number of images for review by fellow members garnering their opinions for how images could be improved especially if they are to be used subsequently in future club competitions.

23 September - The 2020-21 club season started with a good turnout at the Welcome back meeting in the church hall - the first time the club was able to meet in person since March 2020 when the Covid pandemic crisis struck and all subsequent meetings were held via Zoom.

The business part of the meeting dealt with a range of matters:

• the conduct of face-to-face sessions involving precautions against Covid spread
• the potential for simultaneous Zoom communication for members who could not attend meetings in person
• details of the programme for 2021-22; arrangements for payment of membership subscriptions
• future arrangements for SPA competitions
• distribution of prizes from 2020-21.

The Programme Secretary outlined the new season's programme and announced Anything circular as the One month challenge. Many things are round, but the challenge will be in how you photograph them! We will review the results at the 4 November meeting - up to 4 PDI images from each member.

The evening continued with an informal presentation and discussion of a selection of members’ prints chosen from their recent work. The meeting then turned to the important business of refreshments.
